Over-the-Counter Acne Products
Back to school time again and I’m starting to see lots of teens in my chair again, which I absolutely love! I see so many teens now with dry skin and acne. I have named this “Colorado Acne” and am constantly working to balance the moisture while getting rid of the acne.
For many of my Colorado Acne patients I get them on my Image MD Reconstructive Facial Cleanser, the Clear Cell Acne Lotion (every other day only) and the Ormedic Bio-Peptide Creme or Vital C Hydrating Anti-Agin Serum, and of course the Prevention + 50 SPF. But, understandably, many of my moms are a little wary of shelling out over a hundred bucks for a kid that may or may not even wash her face.
So, here is a list I found on TotalBeauty that has some of the products I’ve been suggesting for the past few years.

I am a particular fan of both of the Neutrogena products on the list. A little Benzol Peroxide is fine on Colorado Acne, but really, I wouldn’t suggest it to be used daily, I much prefer Salicylic Acid and Glycolic Acid for my dry acne patients.
The over-the-counter products are much less expensive but remember they contain way more water and you will end up needing to use more product than the better Image products. You will also find they do not last as long, I would say they probably last about 1/4 as long as the more expensive stuff. But, that being said….Moms, if you are just getting started with your teen try the Neutrogena products on the list and see if you can’t at least start on a simple cleansing program for your teen. Don’t forget to have your kiddo moisturize. My current over-the-counter moisturizer fave is Cera Ve PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion.
Again, if you are just getting started with the “acne thing” with your teen send them in to my clinic to get a mini acne facial to start them on the road to recovery. I usually suggest 2-3 treatments at 3 to 4 week intervals. Once he gets the acne under control then I may need to see him only every 2 to 3 months.
Don’t ignore your teen’s acne. Acne scars and can ruin your complexion for life if not treated properly. You don’t have to spend a fortune to help out your teen. The products in drug stores now are better than ever and really do work if used correctly. Good Luck!
